POTA PERformer – KJ6ER

AG5CC · July 5, 2023 · 7 Comments

I obtained these plans from Greg Mihran, KJ6ER, whom I have contacted more than 50 times while he was activating POTA parks. KI5EDP and I have conducted multiple tests and even utilized this setup at the GOTA Station during the 2023 Field Day. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them in the comments section. You can download KJ6ER’s plans to construct one yourself using the provided link, and I have included a few pictures of my own setup for reference.

Thanks for posting this George. I’m currently experimenting with one myself. 17 ft stainless steel whip elevated about 6 feet with 3 sloping radials. On 2 recent POTA activations, I’ve been very impressed with the results.

Very cool idea. I’ve looked at all the pictures here and on the attached pdf. How are you attaching the aluminum pole to the tripod? On this page it looks like it’s just ranbtheough the center of the tripod. Did you just happen to find a tripod that worked right or is this price part of your tripod? In the PDF it looks as if the pole was attached to the tripod ball head but I could zoom in close enough to tell how it was attached. Any info or additional pictures is appreciated.

      Andrew,
The mount I used to attach the antenna to the tripod was a 3 Way Aluminum Cb or Ham Antenna Aluminum Mirror Mount with Stud. I purchased for Amazon Here – https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01G2QSNDG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I also made the pictures in the post were you can enlarge them.

Hi, this is Greg KJ6ER, the designer of the PERformer quarterwave antenna here in Silicon Valley, CA. I am so pleased to see your success with the antenna in the field and very happy to have you share it with the club! My PDF antenna plans are living documents and I’m usually tweaking them every month. If you’re interested in getting the most up-to-date version of the plans, feel free to email me (I’m good on QRZ). I’m also happy to answer any questions you have or comments you want to share. Keep up all the fun, that’s what ham radio is all about, 73 KJ6ER

      Hi Greg (KJ6ER),

Great to hear from you! I appreciate the work you’ve put into the PERformer quarter-wave antenna—it’s been a solid performer (pun intended) in the field, and I’ve enjoyed putting it to use. I’ll definitely reach out to grab the latest version of your plans; it’s great that you’re continuously refining the design.

I’ll be sure to share my experiences with the club and let you know if we have any feedback or questions. Thanks for making such a useful resource available to the ham community!
