Another Meet and Greet & POTA with the White River Radio & Communications Group
On the brisk Saturday morning of October 28, 2023, the White River Radio & Communications Group gathered for an exceptional day of amateur radio and camaraderie. Despite the cool, cloudy weather interspersed with rain, our spirits were high as we convened at Kennedy Park, nestled on the scenic banks of the White River in Batesville, AR.
It All Happened Here

Our event location wasn’t just picturesque – it was strategically chosen for a dual Parks on the Air (POTA) activation: the Civil War Trail (K-7435) and the Southwest Trail (K-7436). The anticipation was tangible as Nathan (KI5EDP) and I arrived early to get everything arranged. Nathan’s arrival with a smoker full of succulent ribs was a delightful surprise, setting the tone for a day filled with good food, fun, and radio.

Wayne (KB9ELS) soon joined us, and together, we began setting up our stations. Others followed, bringing an array of food, drinks, and enthusiasm.
On the Airwaves

Leann (K5LPL) with Chris (N5CRL), our Net Manager for the Happy Hams and other local nets, impressively set up a full 11 Meter (CB) station alongside a 2m station. We also had two HF stations primed for action. The sense of community deepened as Genice (KI5GRX) presented Nathan and me with some wonderful surprises and handcrafted items to commemorate the event.
Nathan’s 3D-printed WRRC trophies for every attendee, alongside other goodies, added a special touch. Sheri (AB5SC)’s chili was a hit, warming us in the cool weather.

A Frenzy of Activity
The excitement peaked when the “Hamily” – Charles (KF5TL), Debbie (KI5QQG), Ithyca (KI5QOS), and Nicholas (KI5QQH) – arrived, sparking a frenzy of park activations. The parks were activated around ten times, a testament to our collective enthusiasm and skill. Special thanks to Glendal (W5WEC) for making the trip, and to Noel (K5NES) Bert (KI5CGU), Ed (K8UFK), Joyce (KE4UWI) Sue (AI5LZ), and the many others who contributed to the vibrant atmosphere.

Amee (KI5ORQ) arrived with what I can only describe as the best cookies ever, perfectly timed to boost our spirits.
Highlights and Looking Ahead
Among the day’s many highlights, Nathan and Wayne making contact with the ISS (International Space Station) was a standout moment. The event, filled with games for kids and bustling activity, lasted from 8 am until the late afternoon. A tip of the hat to Chris for setting up his 11-meter CB station, which attracted several enthusiasts.

As we wrapped up, plans for our second Winter Field Day on January 27-28, 2024, were set in motion. It was a whirlwind of activity, knowledge sharing, and pure joy in radio.
A Heartfelt Thank You
I might not have mentioned everyone, but your presence was felt and appreciated. We eagerly invite you to join us at our next event. To Nathan and every single person who made this day memorable: thank you. Your passion and camaraderie are the heartbeat of the White River Radio & Communications Group.
